The Municipality of Spetses honors every year the heroic event of the Spetsiots, the Battle of Spetses, which took place on September 8, 1822, and has been recorded as one of the most significant events of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The municipality organizes “Armata,” the island’s largest celebration, with a reenactment of the glorious naval battle, accompanied by exceptional cultural events. The people of Spetses dedicated their victory to the Virgin Mary, building the small church of Panagia Armata, as, according to tradition, she helped the Greeks defeat the Turkish fleet.
A large number of visitors, both Greek and foreign, come to Spetses every September to attend the grand festive events of “Armata,” which last for a week and are organized in memory of the Battle of Spetses. The celebration program includes painting exhibitions, music and dance events (concerts, choirs, traditional dance and music groups, etc.), theatrical performances, cannon fire, and more.
On the second Saturday of September, the reenactment of the historic naval battle takes place, with the burning of a replica of the Turkish flagship, alongside a narration of the historical events. The reenactment concludes with a spectacular display of fireworks and flares. A large number of Spetses residents participate in the celebrations, and many officials, representatives of the state, the church, authorities, as well as figures from the world of arts and letters, honor Spetses with their presence.
